The Story of Sam Bass was taught to us in elementary and middle school. And many areas around town are named after him. There is a Sam Bass road, a Sam Bass cemetary (now named the Round Rock Cemetary) where his body is buried, a Sam Bass theater, elementary school, a fire department and many other things. Even though this man's lifestyle is not one that most people in the same town of Round Rock would have identified with, his image became a major part of our community. In the more politically correct era we still have Frontier Days, but no longer is there a shootout on the street and the city of Round Rock tries to diminish the story of Sam Bass. In the early days of Round Rock Sam Bass was kid of a Robin Hood figure who never harmed the poor but punished the wealthier classes. If you examine the city website about the story of Sam Bass, no longer is he seen as a local legend but that of an inept gangster that the city tries to distance itself from. I think originally the fact that this famous Outlaw met his end here in Round Rock was important because it put the city on the map for something. But as Round Rock has tried to become this more surburban and peacefull city the idea of having an outlaw as an icon became a pox mark for some. The city of Round Rock has always prided itself ont he lawfull and heavily police patroled city. So when the major icon of the city is a outlaw the message is somewhat obscured.

From the story there are also other sites named after those involved, such as A.W.Grimes, which is now the name of a larger thoroughfare in the city.
