In the city of Round Rock we had few claims to fame before becoming "The Sports Capital of Texas." Round Rock was named for exactly that--a round rock.

Not exactly the most happening place to grow up in.

The person and event most celebrated when I was a child was the ambush and shooting of Sam Bass. Every year during the week of July 21st the city of Round Rock held Frontier Days. This festival had a variety of events and activites for families in the area. They had the traditional fair type food and games for kids. But the most vivid memory for me of this festival is the re-enactment of the Sam Bass shooting. Actors (city colunteers) would dress up as the gang of robbers or lawmen and have fake shootout in the middle of main street Round Rock. Then the climax of the story was when Sam Bass was shot on top of the public library. This single event in history had effect on the city.
